ARTIST STATEMENT

Simply put, my work is the product of curiosity.

A desire to explore colour and shape, a sculpting method, or a personal challenge have all led me down paths of artistic discovery.

I aspire to create approachable yet thought-provoking art, incorporating humor, subtle gestures, and expressions, with economy of form. There is a vital consciousness in everything I create.

Sculpting mainly human and animal forms, I am motivated by the aesthetic possibilities that can be obtained through the transfiguration of clay and paint. While uncommon in clay sculpture, I use casein paint because it has the appearance of integrating with the body of the clay, rather than sitting on the surface. I work in clay for its warmth and the opportunity it affords for spontaneous texture and line.

Through my work, I hope to touch the viewer in some way, but leave meaning and interpretation to them. I want the viewer’s interaction with my work to be based on their personal history and experience.
